Cell Phones

Well I’ve been trying to figure out something to write for my blog since we first got the email saying that we would have to keep a weekly blog. Well up until now I was clueless. After the first class and dividing ourselves into groups that we thought explained who we are or what we enjoyed to do most I thought of something. Although I picked the television category because I do spend A LOT of time watching tv there was another category not up there that I can relate to even more. It is sad to say it but I think there should be a new category…cell phones…I cannot live without my cell phone! I have my cell with me 24/7. As I sit here writing my blog it is in my pocket where I have it all the time. It doesn’t matter if i’m in class or just going to get the mail I always have to have it with me. Its never turned off. I never thought I would be one of those people always on their cell, in their car, at the mall or even texting during class. Well it turns out I am. I cannot stop text messaging! Since moving away from home it seems like the easiest and most convenient way of keeping in touch with my friends back home. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing I can always write back to a text. So although I would like to say that I most related to the topic of books or something more educational I’m gonna have to say we should add cell phones to the list.On another note this class sounds like the most enjoyable class I have yet to take. Having an instructor that can relate so well to us is awesome, especially since its a three hour class!

I have to say that I completely agree with you about cell phones! I hate going anywhere without mine, it completely stresses me out! haha.. Its comforting to me to know that I can make a call whenever I need to, and that I can receive a call whenever. And I have to say, text messaging really is the best. Its so fast, easy and cheap, its great. And its wicked how you can send text messages to friends via MSN, and not have to spend any money on text messaging charges. I love it! I feel that technology (namely cell phones) really has enabled people to communicate more easily (and more often!). Great post!

I can completely relate to your attatchment to your cell phone. I have had a cell phone for going on 8 years now since I was able to drive and since then I haven’t been anywhere without it. When I go into the mountains or away on vaction and I don’t get service I am calling it all the time to see if I have any messages. Texting has become my new favorite thing as well instead of calling people when I have something to ask them or say to them I will just text them and that sometimes is what gets me through a class when a prof and the class seem to be dragging on!

Break the Addiction! Remember that your cell phone is a tool, not a leash. You are its master, not the other way around. Good luck,
Good Post,

My cellphone is basically my third arm! I completely agree with you in regards to its importance in every day life. I have it with me at all times. In class, in my locker at the gym, in my car, everywhere! I feel detached if I forget it as its my main source of communication between me and my family and friends. Texting now I find I use more than calling ppl, since its free for me during the day time hours. I always have time to text!! Great idea to bring up the importance of cellphones as I think its the form of new age media that I use the most!

My life also revolves around my cell phone. I can’t go anywhere with out it, and if I happen to misplace it or forget it somehwere, all hell breaks loose. I’m not to sure why or when I developed this strange addiction/need, its almost like a child and their security blanket Its just something I need to have with me at all times. So, maybe it’s a safety thing. Well either way it is a strange addiction and I’m sure with all the new inovations taking place within the cell phone industry, this so called cell phone addiction will only get worse. Soon we’ll probably have them wired right into our brains. How creepy is that?

When I got my first cell phone, I did so because it was cheaper than getting a land-line through Telus (the deposit was crazy-expensive!). But as I got more and more attached to my cell, I started to become very dependent on it and my cell phone bill started to get so expensive I was spending more on it than food (I know, I know, that’s crazy!). My roommates and I decided to get a Shaw land-line now that they are in Lethbridge and I have completely stopped using my cell phone and it is so freeing. I love it! Although, I have heard about the iPhone and it looks pretty cool…

I got my first cell phone in grade 10. I’m sure I really didnt need one too badly but I insisted I did and continued to use it because quite frankly it was cool. Having access to talk to my friends wherever, whenever, seemed ideal. Now like most of us I almost feel a sense of loss when I dont have my phone on me. Like I’m going to miss somthing really important or something is going to happen and I’ll need it asap. Turns out usually I dont, infact my cell phone is probably quite often used for silly, immature, text msg’s sent by friends and roomates. But none the less I continue to bring it everywhere. Now looking back in grade 10, I dont even think I would have been able to grasp how strongly technology affects me. Text messaging is just a mobile form of MSN which I am totally addicted to. As I can see….I’m not alone.

Hello,
I couldn’t help but comment… Really I want to reply to dsll’s comment which I found really interesting because I am the exact opposite. When I go to the mountains or more specifically Castle Mountain (which during the winter is weekly) I am relieved to be free of my cell for a day or two. Why would I want to be checking my cell phone when I am already on the hill having the time of my life – what could I possibly be missing that is better than the mountain itself? Of course, there is the potential that someone could be trying to reach you with some kind of an emergency, but usually I am not so worried about things like that. I agree that cell phones allow for much easier communication, however I believe there is a problem when you cannot turn your phone off or ignore a text message. There is a difference between communicating with intent and merely communicating because you can. If I am going to see my girlfriend in an hour I don’t need to be text messaging her for the hour before I actually see her. Anyway I thought it was a great topic…

I have to say your so right about adding cell phones to the list! Of course I always have my cell with me and If I accidently forget it at home I feel lost. Text messages can be so great for flirting too you may let your inhibitions go a little when your not face to face . And now with cellphones having just about any feature connecting to the internet, you can watch t.v and listen to tunes aswell as chat to your friends. Text messaging can be so much fun especially when your friends live in calgary. You save the long distance charges and if your busy you can still text. Using cool slang or short phrases to get your point across gets the imagination going. To the comment before mine I have to agree it is nice to leave your cell phone at home on time spent on the hill snowboarding (where would you put it anyways)or when your on vacation too! Our lives get so busy and sometimes your just having way too much fun to answer the phone! Well good on ya for bringing such a true topic up I hope the prof changes his lesson plan and adds cell phones to the list ! Kindest thoughts. Chau, BE
