Music, Music, Music….

Well I have no problem admitting that yes I do listen to pop music..or I used to! Now I can’t stand it!! For some reason in class I will get Beyonce in my head “to the left to the left,” I have no idea what the rest of the words are but its always stuck in my head. Same with Fergie “fergilicious”…I dunno if I even spelt that right. But anyways it is hard not to get these songs stuck in my head when they are played over and over again on the radio and my neighbour seems to enjoy listening to them every morning! So why do we like these songs???
I would say its mostly teens or pre-teens who are interested in the artists that I can only hope one day will be one hit wonders. They look up to these artists and aspire to be like them. I know everyone has had some singer or celebrity in general they wanted to be. Well as I get older I’ve pretty much given up on any ideas of making it “big” one day. I would prefer my life that is easy going for the most part compared to someone say like Britney Spears who can’t keep herself in rehab. Or what about Paris Hilton? I heard that she didn’t want to sing in public..whats with that??? I mean if you refuse to sing in public doesn’t that mean that most likely the record company has probably altered your voice in some way??? Well even if they did alter her voice she still should never sing again.
I for one I do not download music online. I used to and then I got tired of the song making some screeching noise in the middle or hearing the words “aol first listen” in the middle of a song. Wellmaybe I was just bad at downloading, even though I say it had something to do with my computer. It took me way too long to download songs where it would probably take me way less time to drive to the store and pick up the cd.
Since moving to Lethbridge I still have not found a radio station that I like. When driving back to Calgary as soon as I get Calgary radio stations back it makes the drive soo much better!! And I will admit that when my friends and I go on roadtrips the Aqua cd is always in the car. Yes I know it is sad but the words are soo catchy!! I’m sure everyone knows the song..”I’m a barbie girl in my barbie world”….Plus it makes the drive go by faster when everyone in the car knows the words and sings as loud as they can. Now I have barbie girl in my head….

It is funny that you mentioned aqua because where I work the kids who are 5 years old LOVE aqua. I wouldn’t even have thought that they knew who they were or had heard them before! But they do and they know all the words, it is so cute to watch them sing it. It also brings back memories of high school when they came out and these kids probably weren’t even born! I will admit I still listen to some pop music too, and calgary radio stations provide a wider variety of music to listen to between the stations I am pretty much garunteed to find a song that I can listen to and sign too which I do very well driving in my car alone!

YES! You nailed it on the head, well except I like Paris Hilton. Perhaps people just need to give these people a break and let them live their lives. It’s difficult when everything they do is in the public eye. I have to agree that Lethbride radio stations suck and well, Aqua is amazing. Vibe is the best station in Calgary, and they should bring it to Lethbridge, because they are really doing Lethbridge an injustice without it here.
I have to disagree that young girls aspire to be people like Britney, etc. I listen to Britney and Paris, but I in no way, shape, or form aspire to be any of them. Sometimes people just listen to the music because of how it sounds, not like the singer looks like. I think it’s wrong to assume that people that listen to that type of music will only turn to those musicians in their search for role models.

Pop songs get stuck in your head because they are made to be catchy. Before music became all commercial, it was about selling the song, not the artist, and it wasn’t about the money, it was about the music. They made pop songs simple so that people would get the tune stuck in their head and remember the song. It also made it easier to pick it out on a piano and have a little hoe down! So maybe that part of pop (and probably only that) has stayed true, and that is why you are constantly singing “to the left, to the left” (a song which I like, by the way!)
